Has anyone made any abalone rossetes and is it hard to do? |

Most students can pull off an abalone rosette without any trouble. There's a variety of ways of doing them, e.g. assembled straight into the top, assembled on a workboard, then inlaid, etc.. For a first one, I'd recommend assembling off the guitar, as if things go pear shaped there's less chance of doing damage to your top if you decide to re-do. A couple of books at least cover it; Gore and Gilet, Cumpiano and Natelson are two that come to mind. |

When you say "made" do you mean from abalone blanks, or has anyone inlayed an abalone rosette? You can buy the curved shell strips for a reasonable price, and there are plenty of people on eBay selling abalone rosettes. I don't think the cost savings would be significant enough to get me to cut one as opposed to buying one. |

inlaying a curved piece of abalone was one of the easiest things for me to do on my first guitar. |

You mean something like my post in this discussion? Saying it's easy is misleading, but it's not at all difficult. viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=41039&start=25 |

Joshua, Actually if you have a router or dremel with a circle cutting fixture it is fairly easy. The hardest part is getting the cutout in the right spot and the right size to take the abalone and planned purfling lines |

If you know the inner or outer diameter of the rosette, its easy. Just test on scrap first. You will need a circle cutter for your dremel or router. |
